General Questions
What is Direct Primary Care?
Direct Primary Care (DPC) is an innovative alternative payment model for primary care where patients pay a simple flat monthly fee that covers comprehensive primary care services instead of a fee for service basis. DPC physicians are able to focus on their patients and not on their insurance. The hallmark of DPC is adequate time spent between patient and physician working towards a lasting relationship based on trust. Patients are empowered to choose their personal physician. DPC physicians are committed advocates for patients within the healthcare system. DPC physicians can provide more value to the patient when there is no middleman to consider. The ultimate goal is health and well-being, not simply the treatment of disease. DPC eliminates undesired fee-for-service (FFS) incentives in primary care that distort healthcare decision-making by rewarding volume over value. This undermines the trust that supports the patient-doctor relationship and rewards expensive and inappropriate testing, referral, and treatment.
Is Direct Primary Care the Same as Concierge Care?
A little, but without the high price tag . . . or valet parking! We provide a concierge level of service to all members but try to make things affordable for people of all incomes, with or without insurance. Concierge practices often have a higher membership fee and still require and process insurance so the doctor must still jump through insurance hoops to care for you. That enables them to see fewer patients, but the relationship is still dictated by a third party.
The membership fee allows us to provide the majority of primary care in an innovative way for a simple, fixed price. It allows members to better budget their health care finances and helps our practice provide the services we offer at affordable prices.

Can I come for a one time visit?
No, we do not provide visits or care outside of our standard membership. However, if you would like to come check out our clinic and meet the doctor before joining, we would be happy to answer any questions.
Do you accept members with existing medical problems?
Absolutely, and often these are the members who see the most benefit from our services. Our memberships (eligibility and fees) are not based upon any existing medical issues or conditions.
Are there any income or health guidelines for becoming a member?
No, we do NOT have any income or health guidelines to become a member. Our fees are the same regardless of income, insurance arrangement, level of health or utilization of our services.
What if I am healthy and rarely go to the doctor?
That is great! Our primary focus is to keep members well and to avoid lots of “medical” care. As such, we can dedicate more time to prevention and lifestyle issues to continue to keep you away from the expensive, cumbersome health care system. However, when you do need care, we are available 24/7 to help get you back on track. Most of the unexpected trips to ER or urgent care that would have emptied your pocketbook can easily be covered in a same day visit here at Reed Family Medicine, often saving the member enough to justify the cost of a year worth of membership fees!
What if I need outside care? Specialists, diagnostic testing, ER, hospital?
We can order or refer just as any insurance-based doctor can do. For some outside services, we can help find reasonable “cash” prices if you are paying out-of-pocket – especially radiology and lab. We frequently can provide many urgent care and minor emergency services during regular or after-hours (stitches, simple fractures, etc.) that can help people avoid a trip to the ER. However, we do recommend having health insurance in the case of an unexpected, expensive event such as surgery, ER visit, or hospitalization.
About Our Services
Primary Care
“Primary care includes health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, patient education, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses” – American Academy of Family Physicians
Women's Health
We can provide standard women’s and gynecologic services, including pelvic exams, pap smears, birth control and menopause management..
Pediatric Care
We provide all standard childhood health care services including yearly physicals, acute care (sore throats) and chronic disease management (asthma, allergies, etc.). We can administer childhood vaccinations in our clinic through your insurance.
Urgent Care
We save some appointments everyday for issues that arrive without much warning. There’s never a bad time to receive good care!
Virtual Care
“Virtual visits” should be thought of as a supplement to good primary care. Generally, if the issue does NOT require a physical exam, a virtual visit is fine. Many chronic issues (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, etc.) can be largely managed by email and virtual visits. However, any issue requiring a physical exam (e.g. coughs, sinus infections, ear infection, new pain, etc.) we will recommend a traditional clinic visit.
Billing/Insurance Questions
Are there any hidden fees?
Nope. We provide most care to members without any fees at all! If there is a charge for labs, testing or procedures, we are always transparent with our pricing. If we recommend outside services, we try very hard to find you an upfront, reasonable price if paying cash.
Is Direct Primary Care the Same as Concierge Care?
We forgo insurance payments in order to eliminate the middleman. Furthermore, this arrangement frees us from the typical contractual agreements that prevent physicians from offering wholesale prices on laboratory tests, imaging, and medications.
All members have access diagnostic testing (strep, urine dipstick, pregnancy test, flu tests, etc.) for low fees (usually between $5 and $15).
For labs we offer significantly discounted, wholesale prices – 50-90% less than insurance based prices with most routine labs costing less than $10. For example, a panel of 5 routine labs will cost you less than $25 and will not require insurance. If you require testing not listed, you can contact us for pricing of just about anything.
How much will my first visit cost?
We do not charge “per visit”. New members must pay a minimum of one month of membership fees at their first visit to establish care. If any non-covered services are required (labs, medications, etc.) the first visit cost may be slightly more.
How much does an annual physical/wellness/well child check cost?
All wellness visits are provided at no cost to all members! There may be a charge for pathology and labs associated with the visit, but no cost for the annual physical.
Is Reed Family Med a substitute for health insurance?
No. Reed Family Med is a great way to receive high quality primary health care, but we are not a substitute for insurance. We believe that at a minimum some catastrophic coverage is needed for unexpected and expensive events. We’d be glad to help connect you with someone who can assist you in finding a plan that works well with our offerings.
We aren’t insurance, but we can save you money. Perhaps the most critical distinction in our model of care centers on a direct, personal relationship between you and your doctor. If you have a high dedictible, it is often less expensive to pay directly for you medical care at deeply discounted self-pay prices.
What type of insurance would you recommend?
We are not financial or health insurance advisers and recommend you speak with a professional in that industry if you have questions. We would be glad to connect you with one if you do not have an insurance adviser. However, our members often find that a high-deductible (or catastrophic) insurance plan or a healthcare cost sharing ministry tend to be the best pair with direct primary care. We can provide day-to-day services and a high-deductible plan or a cost sharing ministry can help limit the enormous expenses of a major event.

What sets Reed Family Medicine apart from other practices?
We don’t do bureaucracy or anything that stands between the patient and the physician. We don’t take insurance. Our low monthly fee covers comprehensive primary care services delivered by a Board Certified Family Medicine doctor. She will listen, and focus on achieving your healthcare goals. We offer wholesale pricing on anything that you need in our office as an easier and cheaper option for our patients..
